Thirty years ago Cancun was a sandbar known only to local fishermen. Today it is an amazing resort boasting numerous luxury hotels, nearly all of them fronting the magnificent 20 kms beach. Standards of service are very high here, and you will not find the sleepy “maсana” attitude which sometimes prevails in more laid back resorts.

Getting around in Cancun is a breeze there is a bus service which travels the length of the hotel strip every few minutes, 24-hours a day, and the cost is about $1.00.

On the open-sea side of the hotel zone the sea is sometimes quite rough watch out for the warning flags and exercise caution. However most hotels have impressive pool facilities, and you may prefer the luxury of a swim-up bar. For those of you who can’t relax in the sun for more than a few hours, there’s tennis, golf, deep-sea fishing and lots of choice in watersports.

Nightlife is plentiful, with bars and nightclubs everywhere, not just in your hotel

Shopping is impressive here, the malls are elegant marble buildings, air conditioned of course, with a lot of famous brand-name stores. A wide range of local handicrafts is available in several local markets, and these too are on the shuttle bus route.

If the Mayan culture appeals to you, consider a day trip to either Tulum or Chichen Itza. Tulum can be combined with a visit to Xel-ha, a fascinating nature park and lagoon where you can snorkel or swim with the dolphins. Chichen Itza is further away which makes for a long day trip but worth the drive. Take bottled water on any day trips, it can get hot, especially at mid-day.
