The 10 cheapest cars for young drivers to insure
Young drivers often bear the brunt of high motoring costs as age and inexperience are big factors in determining just how risky a driver is
In order for us to help new drivers find an affordable way to get on the road, we regularly update our list of the cheapest cars to insure for drivers under the age of 25.
Our Pricing team looks at our policy base to find the cars which were cheapest on average to insure over the previous few months. Looking at data between January and March 2017 we see a few new additions to the list, say goodbye to others and see some in new positions.
So, take look to find out which cars could save you a pretty penny when you come to insure one.
1. Volkswagen Fox – £671.68
This city car has been in our ranks before and it’s back up in the top spot once again. It may not have the refined looks of its rivals or the tech to match, but it has a spacious cabin and a driving experience to match bigger cars. The Fox lacks the conventional three-seat bench in the rear for two large seats with ample head and legroom. Opt for the urban-spec models and the rear seats can slide back to give more room and slide them forward for enough space for the weekly shop.
2. Nissan Qashqai – £672.52
The Qashqai just goes to show it doesn’t have to be all about tiny boot space and a lack of rear leg room to get the cheapest insurance price. It’s more expensive to buy than most city cars, but, this urban-crossover more than makes up for it with its sporty handling and tonnes of tech.
3. Fiat 500 – £674.46
This quirky city-car has become one of the most popular cars on UK roads, it offers Italian retro styling inside and out, along with superb engine choices that make this car equally fun to drive as to look at. With a wide array of design options this city car can suit everybody’s preferences, or just stand out from the crowd!
4. Citroen C1 – £682.62
Coming in fourth for a second time is this cute city-car. The new design has really enhanced the look and the choice of colours in a dual tone option means the ability for unique styles are endless. With options of keyless go, reversing camera and touch screen, the C1 is a tech box on wheels.
5. Fiat Panda – £684.79
This unconventional city-car offers a lot more than meets the eye. Not one of the most glamorous cars to cast your eye upon, but its tall body offers good amounts of interior space and can come with a range of options and engines to suit most tastes. The Panda also offers the option of a bulkier 4X4 version, which has the off-road capabilities of most SUV’s. The engine options may not provide the punch that some drivers would like, but as an all-rounder, the Panda is an exciting concept.
6. Volkswagen Up! – £689.06
The Up! has sneaked up upto sixth position from last year’s results. There are three different models to choose from and they start at just £8,995. The new trim Beats Up! offers a new 300 watt sound system, a bundle of new decals and hugely impressive performance figures. Available in three or five doors, this city-car boasts one of the most iconic and recognizable shapes of the Supermini generation.
7. Volkswagen Beetle – £689.88
Coming in as a new contender in seventh place, it’s everything you’d expect from a well-built, solid German car. Based on the Mark VI Golf, the Beetle offers better driving dynamics and huge amounts of interior tech including bluetooth, DAB radio and keyless entry as standard. You may have to compromise on headroom and space in the rear, but with the iconic retro design, does that really matter?
8. Hyundai i20 – £702.53
This small family hatchback has made it onto this list before and now it’s back. Available in three or five door options, the i20 offers more room and standard equipment than anything on the market at the same price. If you’re looking for something that’s exciting to drive the i20 doesn’t offer huge amounts of thrills and dynamic capabilities compared to class rivals. If you opt for SE or higher specs, however, gets you bluetooth, audio streaming, steering wheel controls and six speakers as standard
9. Toyota Aygo – £705.48
The Aygo is based on a similar design to the C1. A more youthful design from the predecessor, it comes with huge amounts of interior options and areas for personalisation to ensure the Aygo can suit anyone’s taste. Sharp, light steering and good brakes make this the ideal go-getter around town and the 1.0l packs a fair punch too! There are some great deals to be had on the Aygo.
10. Hyundai i10 – £707.49
The multi-award winning i10 is back with a new sporty design and advanced connectivity features. It comes with a five year unlimited mileage warranty, five year roadside assistance and five years of annual vehicle healthchecks. If you opt for models above the S trim, DAB radio, bluetooth come standard, with premium SE models offering Apple CarPlay and pretty much every option you would ever need.
